The College and Association of Nurses in Alberta (CARNA) have awarded Wood Buffalo PCN Executive Director Lori Apostal the Nursing Excellence in Administration Award for 2017.

Lori was nominated by her team and says she was very surprised when CARNA officials notified her of the win. She says, "The fact that the team wanted to nominate me means even more to me than winning the award. It's really nice to win the award, but it meant the most to me that my team thought I was worthy of the award."

WB PCN Board Chair, Dr. Helen Akosile-Xulu writes, "Lori has been an exceptionally dedicated and competent leader of our PCN, despite the many challenges we have faced in the past year. She has exemplified the qualities of a true leader. She is consistent, effective and always leads by example. We are elated that she won this prestigious award that she greatly deserves."

Many of the staff quotes from the nomination speak to Lori's leadership style and the respect she has earned from the PCN team, "She really cares about us and she sees value in every individual here and how we work as a Team is important." Another said, "There is a culture here that she has established where there is a willingness to help the people we serve as patients and as colleagues."  And from the nomination," Since joining WB PCN Lori's faced extreme challenges including a major flood and the wildfire, during which she definitely rose to the occasion; working tirelessly with Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and provincial PCNs to support physicians, patients and staff. But those who know her are not surprised."

The CARNA Awards of Nursing Excellence recognize several RNs and NPs for their contributions to nursing practice. The awards honour and celebrate their commitment and pursuit of nursing excellence.

The 2017 recipients are invited to a CARNA awards gala in May. Congratulations Lori on your well-deserved reward!
